Storing Your Motor Home This Winter? Here's How To Prevent Damage

Posted on

If you own a motor home, you want it to last as long as possible. Next to your home, your motor home is probably your biggest investment; in time and money. During the summer, you might end up spending more time in your motor home than you do in your real home. If you're like most people, you close your motor home up for the winter. Unfortunately, if you're not taking the proper precautions when closing your motor home up each winter, you might be exposing it to dangers that could destroy your investment. Before you put your motor home in storage this winter, here are a couple of steps you should take to prevent damage.

Take Care of the Pest Control

When winter comes, pests are going to be looking for warm places to hide out from the cold. If they can't get into your home, your motor home will be the next best thing. If you haven't taken the proper precautions to pest-proof your motor home, those pests are going to have an easy time getting in. That's why it's so important that you utilize all the pest control you have at your disposal.

Mice are the most notorious pests when it comes to unwanted winter guests. They'll use any entrance they have at their disposal. To stop them from gaining access, you'll need to place steel wool inside the tailpipe of your motor home. Be sure to tie a colorful bandanna or string around the tailpipe. That will remind you to remove the steel wool when warm weather arrives again. You should also apply fresh caulking around all the windows and vents. The fresh caulking will keep the pests out.

Bring on the Mold Prevention

During the winter, you motor home will be susceptible to mold damage, especially if you live in a warmer climate where winters get rainy, but not overly cold. To stop mold from growing while your motor home is in storage, you'll want to thoroughly clean your kitchen and bathroom. Dry the sinks and tub completely, and leave the doors and windows open for a few hours to completely remove the moisture. Next, place an open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator, and freezer compartments, and leave the doors open.

Once summer is over, it will be time to put your motor home into storage for the winter. Use the tips provided here to prevent damage, and talk to companies like Drydock Depot RV Boat Storage for more advice.
